This is the tenth time that the company has been selected for this PIA award since 2000.

DISC, a source of specialty packaging products for more than 40 years, has once again earned a place on the “Best Workplace in the Americas” list from the Printing Industries of America (PIA). It is the tenth time the company has been selected since PIA established this program in 2000 to acknowledge exemplary human resources practices in the industry. DISC has also made the program’s “Best of the Best” list four times. “We are so honored to be consistently acknowledged by the industry for our superior work environment,” says Margaret Krumholz, president of DISC. “It is a validation of the vision, commitment and work of our human resources professionals and, indeed, our entire management team. We often state that people are at the core of our values and our success as a company. We fervently believe in ‘walking the talk’ when it comes to designing programs that foster the growth, development and well-being of our employees.” The PIA is the world’s largest graphic arts trade association. Each year, it opens competition to printing and packaging member companies who demonstrate that they care about their employees’ work environment and can balance their personal goals and ambitions with those of the company. A panel of HR professionals, with decades of experience in the industry, reviews the submissions. Evaluations are based on eight criteria: Management Practices; Work Environment; Training and Development Opportunities; Financial Security; Workplace Health and Safety; Work-Life Balance; Recognition and Rewards; and Health and Wellness Programs. According to Diane Ferrante, director of human resources, “We continue to focus on excellent management practices, open communication, and overall commitment to our employees. Each year, in spite of the still challenging economic climate in the US, we strengthen our recognition programs, add a variety of customized training sessions, and continue to offer a superior benefits package that includes flexible spending, company-paid short-term disability and low cost-sharing health insurance.” This year, DISC received a New York State training grant under the Workers Skills Upgrading Program, enabling the company to hold onsite courses for employees during work hours with the cost of the trainer paid through the grant. Ferrante summarizes two new programs that empower and engage employees to take charge of their health. “We installed an on-site gym equipped with treadmills, stationery bikes, elliptical machines, and other equipment. Employees can use the gym on a daily basis at lunch, on breaks or after hours. Secondly, the company contracted the services of EngagementHealth LLC, a Chicago-based wellness incentives company that offers disease prevention and health promotion programs. Employees can choose a targeted area – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, nutrition, fitness, smoking cessation, etc. – and receive a health assessment, coaching and customized plan. Employees who commit to weekly participation get a reduction in their contributions to the company healthcare plan.” Michael Makin, president and CEO of Printing Industries of America, adds that “Best Workplace in the Americas” winners routinely recognize that success is generated many ways, and importantly, through their employees. We applaud DISC once again for achieving this honor.”
